Celebrating Support for Working Families
Today was the 100th anniversary celebration of Bean Day, and it was great to get a chance to stop in Wagon Mound and visit with the people of Mora County.
After the Bean Day Parade this morning we traveled down to Santa Fe to celebrate Labor Day with people from around the state. It was great to see so many of our Labor brothers and sisters out today to show their strength and support for working families.
Respecting and remembering the hard work, sweat and time that we have put into having a fair and equitable working conditions is most important thing we can do today.
Organized labor has brought many needed changes to our nation, from safe working conditions to living wages, and we have continued that work in the 111thCongress to support working families. We passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which makes sure that women get equal pay for equal work. This was the first bill we passed in the house in this Congress, because we know that the rights of workers are of the utmost importance.
We’ve been working for the Employee Free Choice Act, which would make sure that any organization that wants fair labor representation can have it; we worked to extend unemployment benefits, to make sure that those who couldn’t get jobs still had the means to get by, and we went back to Washington - two weeks ago - during our district work period to pass a jobs bill which kept teachers in our schools, cops on our streets, and thousands of fire fighters and first responders employed.
This work is not something that we can take lightly; it is
something that must continue. We need to make sure that we will have safe and equitable working conditions for the next generation, and the ones after that.
This election is about allowing our country to move forward to get our country back on track. We need to make sure that we do not regress from the progress we have made over the last two years.

Tom Mullins’ Idea for Job Creation in New Mexico: If You Can’t Find a Job Then You Should Move Away
order to achieve the job or growth development that you want,” Mullins
said on KNME. “You might have to move, for instance, you might have to
move up the hill to Los Alamos, you might have to move to Bernalillo
County. You have to be willing to move around the district in order to
achieve our success.”
“These are the kinds of inexplicable ideas that Tom Mullins has repeated
over and over again. From his proposal to put land mines on the border
to his current position that rural New Mexican’s should move to find a
job - his candidacy has been all about taking New Mexico in the wrong
direction” said Aaron Trujillo, Campaign Manager for Rep. Lujan.
“Ben Ray has been working to bring jobs to New Mexico, especially in the
rural areas that need it most. He has worked to bring training to the
community colleges so that students can get the skills they need. He has
helped small businesses so that they can hire more people from the
community, especially those who have been out of work. In contrast, Tom
Mullins is clearly out of touch with the values we hold close in New
Mexico” said Trujillo.
“Ben Ray understands that the answer to our economic problems is not
having people leave their home, their families and their community,”
Trujillo said. “Here in New Mexico we value where we come from and Ben
Ray is going to keep working so that people can strengthen their
communities by helping to bring business and jobs to rural New Mexico.
That is how you make a difference here.”

Gallup, and Intertribal Ceremonial Parade
We started the day at Rocket Café in Gallup for a breakfast meeting with voters who were excited about this election, and are ready to get involved. We spent the rest of our Friday visiting the Red Rock chapter, meeting with people impacted by uranium mining. The campaign ended the day watching the Intertribal Ceremonial Dances where dancers from tribes across the nation gathered, including several from the pueblos here in New Mexico. It is always a special pleasure to watch the beautiful traditional dancers.
On Saturday Ben Ray walked in the Intertribal Ceremonial Parade with several supporters from the Navajo Nation who volunteered to join the Congressmen in the parade. This parade, which honors the Long Walk of the Navajos, is always an important event for the Navajo Nation, as well as other members of the community.
After the parade we spent some time visiting and talking to small business owners, and stopped by Richardson's Trading Post.
It's always great to get out to the west side of the district, and our supporters in Gallup are fired up and ready to work! We can't wait to get back, and we will be there again soon!
See more photos from the parade on our Facebook page.
Ben Ray Votes to Pass Crucial Bill to Protect Teacher's Jobs
In my work with the American Federation of Teachers in New Mexico, I have seen how dedicated educators are and how they do their best to keep going.
Because Ben Ray's support of this legislation, schools won't have to double up on class sizes because they can't afford enough teachers.
It means more one-on-one time with students and it will leave experienced teachers in the classroom.
It means more New Mexicans stay employed and our teachers can work in a field they are passionate about.
Contrary to what opponents of this bill might say, our teachers are not a special interest. The education of our kids is crucial for their futures. Support for teachers and educators should not be made into a wedge issue.
We appreciate Ben Ray's support of this legislation-and we know that without this bill it would have been a hard year of educators throughout the state and the nation.
Ben Ray has always supported our teachers, and we need leadership that will help our students get the education they deserve.
I encourage all New Mexicans to get involved in this election and volunteer for Ben Ray's campaign. This is a crucial time for the entire state. This election is about ensuring a bright future for all students-and I believe Ben Ray is the best man for the job.
Sincerely,
Christine Trujillo

Ben Ray visits Curry, Quay and Roosevelt Counties
They got signs, literature and bumper stickers to show their support in Roosevelt, Curry and Quay Counties. If you see one of the BRL bumper stickers or yard signs around let us know.
In Portales and Clovis we met with supporters who are excited about working to get Ben Ray reelected. They got signs, literature and bumper stickers to show their support in Roosevelt, Curry and Quay Counties. If you see one of the BRL bumper stickers or yard signs around let us know! (hyperlink)
In Clovis Ben Ray went to the Cannon Air Force Base Appreciation Day to support our Servicemen and Servicewomen by joining local community members to cook lunch for Cannon AFB personnel.
Later that day, supporters opened their home to talk about issues affecting Clovis - like water scarcity, housing, jobs and Cannon Air Force Base.
Also while in Clovis, Ben Ray announced the formation of a partnership between the USDA and the Eastern Plains Housing Development Corporation to bring more housing opportunities to the Eastern part of the district.
On Saturday morning we participated in the Rattler Reunion Parade in Tucumcari, and talked to the people who came back to their hometown for that weekend's festivities about Congressman Lujan's support for Tucumcari. It was great to see so many Rattlers celebrating their time in Quay County.
After the parade we stopped by the Tucumcari Gun Show and got a chance to talk with local gun owners and sportsmen about their needs.
All in all our campaign had a very productive weekend in Eastern New Mexico. Traveling to Quay, Curry and
Roosevelt counties is always a pleasure and an enlightening experience. Eastern New Mexico is truly a place where the constituency is always engaged and working to better their communities.
Ben Ray tours New Mexico, Visits Six Counties in One Day
We started in the morning at 9 a.m. in Las Vegas with a breakfast meeting at the home of one of our supporters, who invited all his friends and neighbors to get active in our effort re-elect Congressman Lujan. They were excited and energized about the election in November. We then went to Mora where the congressman talked about helping out small business owners, like John and Phyllis Martinez, the owners of the Cowboy Kitchen where the event was held. It is small businesses like that are the backbone of our economy and Congressman Lujan is working every day to ensure that they can thrive.
Then we traveled up to Taos where we visited with 50 people at the home of Sienna Sanderson to talk about education and the need for greater educational opportunities in New Mexico.
On the way to Santa Fe we stopped in Alcalde to visit with 30 small farmers to talk about the need for sustainable agriculture and the need to keep the cultures and traditions of tending to the land flourishing. It was great to see the successful agricultural operation of Steve and Kim Martin, where they grow produce for local stores an restaurants. We need to keep this cross between cross between traditional agriculture, entrepreneurship and economic development alive in New Mexico.
In Santa Fe we met with people and talk about renewable energy, education and getting people involved in the 2010 election cycle. They were excited and ready to knock on doors and make call to get out the vote in November.
The day ended in the southern part of the district in the village of Corrales where more that 60 supporters joined us for a backyard if the home of Ennio Garcia-Miera for a campaign BBQ. The Congressman had a great time talking about the issues that are important to New Mexico and listening to ideas of how we can bring jobs to New Mexico. It was a great day!
Our campaign in out there working hard to engage and inform voters about the importance of this election. We cannot regress to the failed policies of the past and we need every New Mexican to get out there and support Ben Ray. If you would like to volunteer on our campaign or would like t get people active in your community send us an email to Grassroots@BenRLujan.com.
The house party tour was a huge success, but it could not have been without the interest and participation of the people in San Miguel, Mora, Taos, Santa Fe, and Sandoval counties. This election cycle is all about getting people excited and engaged, and yesterday was a huge step to victory in 2010!
Thanks to Mora and Taos
Traveling across the district gives us a great chance to get in touch with the people in the district. Meeting with people in each of the counties, and seeing the support in the communities is the part of campaigning that means the most.
We're looking forward to meeting many of you during our Grassroots House Party Tour throughout the district this Sunday. Send us an email at Grassroots@benrlujan.com if you are interested in coming!
President signs Wall Street Reform Bill
The bill creates a new independent consumer protection agency that will ensure that consumers purchasing mortgages and using credit cards get accurate information. It also will protect consumers from hidden fees, terms and abusive policies. Improves transparency and accountability by providing new rules for credit rating agencies, eliminating loopholes used to hide abusive practices, and preventing hidden risky transactions associated with dangerous financial products.
It also helps end too-big-to-fail bailouts by establishing an orderly process for winding down failed banks and financial firms, preventing too-big-to-fail banks from being created and extending rigorous oversight of the activities of more financial firms.
Tom Mullins has already taken the side of credit card and insurance companies, and his opinions on the Wall Street reform bill are sure to take care of big banks and their interests, not the interests of the people of New Mexico.
DPNM spokesperson James Hallinan said in a press release, "New Mexicans deserve to know where Tom Mullins stands on Wall Street reform. Does Mr. Mullins stand with New Mexicans who are sick of being hurt by Wall Street's irresponsibility or does he want to protect the very same big Wall Street banks who helped cause an economic collapse?"
This bill is an important step in making sure that Wall Street banks no longer profit from their irresponsible behavior, which hurts the families in New Mexico. This bill will make sure that big banks and Wall Street are held accountable, improve oversight and transparency, put an end to the bank bailouts and end predatory financial practices so that New Mexico can get back on the right track; and Ben Ray is making sure that happens.
Breaking News: Wall Street Reform Passes House
The House passed Wall Street Reform which will hold Wall Street
accountable, bring transparency into the financial system and put
consumers first by creating strong rules that protect against the worse
practices of Wall Street and predatory lenders while still enforcing existing
rules.
This is an important step, and one we needed to take. But even as
we took on Wall Street, some suggested that we continue to let Wall
Street banks run wild, gambling with the retirements and financial
security of New Mexicans. The Republican leader of the House compared the
current economic crisis, a crisis that costs millions people their jobs
and their savings, to an "ant" and said our Wall Street reform bill was
too tough on Wall Street bankers, calling it a "nuclear bomb."
It's that kind of thinking that we're up against. These are people who want
to coddle Wall Street and who are completely out of touch with New
Mexicans.
Thanks for your time, and your continued support.
Sincerely,
Ben Ray
P.S.
Thank you so much for all of your help before the fundraising deadline.
We reached our goal and we're going to be able to keep our youth
program going strong through the summer!
Congressional Campaign Fellows Meet in Santa Fe for Training
They were trained on how to make connections, and maintain relationships with people in the community and to motivate them to become involved in the campaign.
The Lujan Leadership Congressional Campaign Fellowship is a program designed by our campaign
committee (People for Ben) to give students and people interested in campaign organizing an opportunity to get real life campaign training. Often time's young adults are very aware of what is going on in government and the world around them but don't feel like they can engage the political system. It is important to give interested individuals the opportunity to be politically engaged to better their communities.
"We were thrilled to have these young people come and work with us," said Campaign Manager Aaron Trujillo. "We're so lucky to have people who are excited about the Congressman Lujan's reelection campaign, and really want to become active in their own communities."
The fellows received hands on training, doing a phone bank, going door to door to ask for support, and getting deputized to register voters all over the state.
"Nothing like this has been done in northern New Mexico," said Fellowship Coordinator Justin Bailey. "We are so thankful to Congressman Lujan for helping start it up, and for his enthusiasm for the project."
The fellows had a chance to meet with several important political figures in New Mexico, like State Auditor Hector Balderas, Santa Fe Mayor David Coss and Congressman Ben Ray Lujan.
Congressman Lujan spoke with the fellows on the last day of training, he talked to them about the importance of their work in the community, not only for his campaign but for the future of New Mexican politics.
"I really believe in what you guys are doing and what you are learning. This is big," said Congressman Lujan. "Listen to people and learn, but also share give us ideas and share your thoughts, that's what this is about."
