Family
Ben Ray Luján grew up learning the time-honored traditions
and respected values of rural New Mexico.
He was raised in Nambe, New Mexico, a historic farming community north
of Santa Fe bordered by the pueblos of Nambe and Pojoaque.
Ben's father worked hard and long as a union ironworker to provide for all his children. Ben’s mother, Carmen, is like many strong, hard-working women in America she is the cornerstone of her family, providing her children with the strength, courage and guidance to become solid, contributing members of their communities. Ben's grandfather, Carmen's father, was a union carpenter.
In 1972, the elder Lujan decided to run for public office and was elected to the Santa Fe County Commission. It was a pivotal decision that ultimately led to a vocation of public service on behalf of the people of New Mexico. Today, Ben’s father serves as Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives.
As a young boy and teenager, Ben carried out the chores and responsibilities that came with growing up on a rural family farm. He woke up before dawn to feed the livestock and care for the life-giving waters of the ancient acequias.
Today, Ben proudly continues the long-established, time-honored family traditions of his descendants. He lives in the centuries-old adobe home built by his great-grandparents on land that has been in the family for generations.
