Meet Ben
Ben Ray Lujan is the Democratic nominee for Congress in New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District, a New Mexico Public Regulation Commissioner and a former chairman of the Commission. Commissioner Luján
has a proven record of standing up for the people of New Mexico and fighting
for innovative change.
Ben Ray Lujan was elected to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission on November 2, 2004. Commissioner Lujan represents PRC District 3, which encompasses North Eastern, North Central and Central New Mexico. His fellow Commissioners elected him Chairman for three consecutive terms starting in 2005.
As a leading proponent of renewable energy, Commissioner Luján has worked to increase renewable energy production by New Mexico utilities to 20 percent of their total production by 2020. He also pushed to diversify the renewable portfolio to include solar energy. With his colleagues in California, Oregon and Washington, Luján signed on to the Joint Action Framework on Climate Change on behalf of the state of New Mexico to create regional solutions for global warming.
Commissioner Luján has also helped to improve firefighting services in New Mexico. He worked with firefighters, the state Legislature and other governing bodies statewide to overhaul the New Mexico Fire Fund so that all distributions from the fund, which add up to millions of dollars, will go to improving fire services around the state.
Commissioner Luján has also fought for improved health care for New Mexico consumers by investigating the health-insurance industry's denial practices and spearheading development of legislation that expands access to insurance and closes loopholes. The industry had been using these loopholes to unfairly deny medical claims and void policies.
Before his election to the PRC, Luján served as the New Mexico Cultural Affairs Department's director of administrative services and chief financial officer. He also served as deputy state treasurer.
Ben Ray Luján earned his Bachelor's degree from New Mexico Highlands University in Business Administration.
In Congress, Luján will continue to fight for renewable energy solutions, health care for the uninsured, an economy that works for the middle class and an end to the War in Iraq.
